How to use WPMRace
WPMRace is a free typing speed test that measures words per minute, accuracy, mistakes, and consistency while you type in the live test above. Choose a time or word target, start typing the highlighted text, and review your WPM score when the test ends.
WPM means words per minute. A higher WPM score is useful only when your accuracy stays strong, so WPMRace shows both speed and precision together. For best results, practice short sessions daily, keep your hands relaxed, and aim for 95% accuracy or better before pushing for faster speeds.

What your results mean
Your score uses the standard convention where every 5 characters count as one word, and uncorrected errors are subtracted from the final number — so the WPM you see here is net WPM, the figure employers and certificates use. The result screen also lists your missed words and slow words, which is where the fastest improvement hides: retyping those few words daily moves your average more than any amount of general testing. How WPMRace scores your typing
The WPM formula
"Words per minute" does not count literal words — words vary too much in length for that to be fair. The standard convention counts every 5 keystrokes, including spaces and punctuation, as one word. WPMRace uses that convention, so a score here is comparable to an employer test or a typing certificate.
- Raw (gross) WPM = (all typed characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed — how fast your fingers moved, ignoring mistakes.
- Net WPM = raw WPM − (uncorrected errors ÷ minutes elapsed) — your effective speed, and the number shown as your result.
Worked example: you type 300 characters in one minute and leave 4 errors uncorrected. Raw WPM is 300 ÷ 5 = 60. Net WPM is 60 − 4 = 56. Every uncorrected error erases a full word from your score, which is why accuracy-first practice beats speed-first practice for almost everyone. Below roughly 95% accuracy, a WPM number stops carrying useful information.
Choosing a test length and style
The timer buttons set your duration: 15, 30, 60, or 120 seconds. Short runs flatter you — there is no fatigue and little vocabulary variety — so a 15-second score is for fun, not for proof. WPMRace marks a result as shareable only when accuracy reaches 95% and the run lasted at least 30 seconds. For a number you would quote to an employer, use 60 seconds and take the average of three attempts.
The Classic and Realistic toggle changes what you type:
- Classic draws from common word lists. The rhythm stays even, which makes it the better mode for warming up and for isolating raw finger speed.
- Realistic uses full sentences with capitals and punctuation. Scores come out lower, and that is the point — sentence rhythm, shift keys, and commas are exactly what employer and school tests contain.
What your score means
Use this table to place your net WPM. These bands reflect commonly cited averages across typing platforms and employer requirements:

Which practice scenario should you pick?
The scenario cards above the test swap the text you type for material from a specific kind of work. Picking the one that matches your goal matters more than raw practice volume, because each scenario trains a different weakness:

Data entry is the one scenario scored differently: it reports keystrokes per hour instead of WPM, because the work is fields and codes rather than flowing sentences. Convert with KPH ÷ 60 ÷ 5 = WPM — so 9,000 KPH is about 30 WPM. Full detail is in the data entry typing test guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is the commonly cited global average. For office and admin jobs, 45–60 WPM with 95%+ accuracy covers most postings; above 60 WPM, typing speed rarely comes up in an interview again. Transcription and captioning are the demanding exceptions, asking 75–100 WPM sustained.
Is accuracy more important than speed?
For scoring, yes. Because each uncorrected error subtracts a whole word from net WPM, a 70 WPM run at 90% accuracy often finishes below a 60 WPM run at 98%. Train accuracy to 95%+ first, then raise speed — the reverse order tends to lock in mistakes that are hard to unlearn.
How long should the test be?
At least 30 seconds for a score worth keeping, and 60 seconds if you plan to quote the number. Fifteen-second runs inflate results because fatigue never sets in. Employer tests usually run 1–5 minutes, so practising at 120 seconds is closer to the real thing than most people expect.
Does my keyboard change my score?
Less than most people hope, but not nothing. Key travel and layout familiarity matter more than switch type or price. The largest single gain available to most typists is technique — proper finger placement — not hardware. See the 10-finger touch typing guide.
Can I put my WPMRace score on a resume?
Yes, if you quote it honestly: use net WPM and accuracy from a run of 60 seconds or longer, for example "62 WPM, 98% accuracy". Expect the employer to verify with their own assessment during onboarding, so avoid quoting a lucky 15-second burst. Requirements by role are listed in the WPM by job guide.
Do I need an account, and is my data stored?
